Welcome to Beacon Survival. By purchasing, downloading, installing, or using the Beacon application or any related content provided by Beacon Survival ("Beacon," "we," "us," or "our"), you ("you" or "user") agree to be bound by the terms set out below. Please read them carefully. If you do not agree, do not purchase or use our products.

1. What Beacon Is

Beacon is an educational tool. It is a survival preparedness application that organizes general reference information — written content, AI-assisted question answering, and offline maps — to help you learn about emergency preparedness on your own terms.

Beacon is intended to be one resource among many in your overall preparedness planning. It is not a substitute for professional training, qualified medical care, licensed legal or financial advice, certified emergency response, or your own informed judgment in any situation.

2. Educational Use Only — No Professional Advice

Important

The information provided through Beacon is for general educational and informational purposes only. It does not constitute medical, legal, financial, psychological, military, tactical, or professional advice of any kind, and should not be relied upon as such.

You should always consult qualified professionals before taking action on matters that involve your health, safety, finances, legal rights, or the wellbeing of others. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Medical decisions, including the use of medications, treatments, or first aid procedures
  • Construction, electrical work, plumbing, or any task requiring licensed expertise
  • Use of firearms, weapons, or self-defense tactics
  • Foraging, identification, or consumption of plants, fungi, or wild foods
  • Water purification, food preservation, or sanitation in real-world conditions
  • Communications equipment subject to FCC or other regulatory licensing
  • Evacuation planning, shelter-in-place decisions, or disaster response

If you are experiencing a medical emergency, mental health crisis, or any threat to life or safety, contact emergency services in your area immediately.

3. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, Beacon Survival, its owners, employees, contractors, suppliers, affiliates, and agents shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages arising out of or in connection with:

  • Your use of or inability to use Beacon, including the application, hardware, content, AI-generated answers, or maps
  • Any decision or action you take based on information provided through Beacon
  • Any error, omission, inaccuracy, or outdated information in the content
  • Any failure of the application or hardware to function as expected, including but not limited to during an emergency
  • Any loss of data, personal property, income, or profits
  • Any injury, illness, death, or harm to yourself, your family, third parties, animals, or property

This limitation applies regardless of whether the claim is based in contract, tort, negligence, strict liability, or any other legal theory, and applies even if Beacon Survival has been advised of the possibility of such damages.

You acknowledge and accept that you assume full responsibility for any decisions made or actions taken on the basis of information accessed through Beacon.

4. No Guarantee of Accuracy or Availability

Beacon's content is compiled from a wide range of sources and is reviewed for general usefulness, but we do not guarantee that all information is current, complete, accurate, or applicable to your specific situation. Survival, medical, legal, and regulatory information changes over time. What is appropriate in one location, climate, or circumstance may be inappropriate or unsafe in another.

The AI-assisted features of Beacon ("Ask Beacon") use language models that may produce incorrect, incomplete, or misleading answers. AI output should be treated as a starting point for further research, not as authoritative guidance.

We do not guarantee that Beacon will be available, functional, or accessible at all times, including during emergencies. Hardware can fail. Software can crash. Batteries die. You should never rely on Beacon as your sole source of information in a life-safety situation.

5. AI-Generated Content

When you use the "Ask Beacon" feature, your questions may be processed using third-party AI services. The answers generated are not authored by a human expert and may not reflect current best practice in any field. We strongly recommend verifying critical information against authoritative sources before acting on it.

You agree not to submit confidential, sensitive, or personally identifying information through the AI features.

The same applies to the camera and voice features. When you submit a photo for identification or ask a question by voice, that photo or recording is sent to a third-party AI provider to be processed and returned to you.

Identification of plants and fungi. Beacon includes reference material on plants and fungi, covering both species that are hazardous to touch or ingest and species that are commonly eaten. This material is educational. It is not a substitute for training, for an authoritative regional field guide, or for confirmation by a qualified local expert.

Identification from photographs and written descriptions is inherently uncertain. Many edible species have dangerous or deadly lookalikes, and the distinguishing features can be subtle, seasonal, or specific to a region. Appearance alone is never sufficient.

Never eat any wild plant or fungus on the basis of this app alone. Confirm identification through multiple independent sources before consuming anything, and if any doubt remains, do not eat it. This applies with particular force to mushrooms: several deadly species closely resemble common edible ones, and with some of them poisoning is not apparent until serious organ damage is already underway. There is no home test that reliably distinguishes safe from unsafe.

You accept full responsibility for any decision to handle or consume a wild plant or fungus.

6. Subscriptions and Billing

Beacon is sold as a recurring subscription. The price, billing interval, and number of covered users depend on the plan you select at checkout, and are shown to you before you confirm payment.

Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period at the then-current price for your plan, using the payment method on file, until you cancel. We will give you advance notice by email before any change to the renewal price takes effect.

Payment is processed by Stripe. You can cancel at any time through the billing portal linked from your activation email or by emailing us. Cancellation stops future renewals; it does not end your current period. You keep full access until the end of the period you have already paid for.

If a subscription lapses or a payment fails, access to paid features on your devices is paused until the subscription is renewed. Content you have downloaded remains on your device, and your saved information is not deleted. Resubscribing restores access without re-downloading anything.

Family plans cover the stated number of people. You may share access with the people your plan covers; you may not resell, publish, or distribute your access beyond that.

7. Refunds and Cancellation

If Beacon is not what you expected, contact us within 14 days of your first purchase and we will refund it in full. Renewal payments after that first period are non-refundable, but you can cancel at any time to prevent the next renewal, and you keep access through the end of the period you paid for.

If you are charged in error or something goes wrong on our end, contact us and we will make it right regardless of timing.

8. Intellectual Property

All content within Beacon — including but not limited to the Beacon name, logo, written articles, illustrations, software code, and design — is the property of Beacon Survival or its licensors and is protected by United States and international intellectual property laws.

You are granted a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use Beacon for your own preparedness purposes. You may not:

  • Copy, redistribute, or republish Beacon's content without written permission
  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code
  • Use Beacon's content to train competing AI models or build derivative products
  • Resell, sublicense, or transfer your access to other parties

Beacon also incorporates content from open-source and openly-licensed sources, including OpenStreetMap (© OpenStreetMap contributors, openstreetmap.org/copyright) for map data. Such content is subject to its respective open licenses, which are honored throughout the application.

9. User Conduct

You agree to use Beacon lawfully and responsibly. You will not use Beacon to:

  • Plan, facilitate, or carry out any activity that violates federal, state, or local law
  • Cause harm to yourself or others
  • Infringe on the rights of any third party
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to our systems or other users' devices

10. Privacy

Beacon is designed to function offline as much as possible. Most of your interactions with the application happen entirely on your own device and are not transmitted to us. When you use online features (Ask Beacon, photo identification, and voice input), limited data is sent to our servers and on to a third-party AI provider strictly to answer that request: question text to Groq, photos to Anthropic, and voice recordings to OpenAI. Local alerts send your coordinates directly from your device to the National Weather Service, which does not pass through our servers. We do not sell your data and we do not use advertising or analytics trackers.

For the most current details on what we collect and how it is handled, please see our Privacy Policy.

11. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless Beacon Survival, its owners, employees, contractors, and affiliates from and against any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, costs, or expenses (including reasonable attorney's fees) arising out of or related to your use of Beacon, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any rights of a third party.

12. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will revise the "last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of Beacon after a revision constitutes your acceptance of the updated Terms. We encourage you to check this page periodically.

13. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina, United States, without regard to its conflict of law provisions. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be resolved in the state or federal courts located in North Carolina, and you consent to the exclusive jurisdiction of those courts.

14. Severability

If any provision of these Terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary so that the remaining Terms shall otherwise remain in full force and effect.

15. Contact

Questions about these Terms, or about Beacon in general, can be sent to:

Acknowledgment

By using Beacon, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to these Terms of Service and Liability Disclaimer. You acknowledge that Beacon is an educational tool, that you alone are responsible for decisions you make in your own preparedness, and that no information provided through Beacon is a substitute for professional advice or qualified emergency response.

Beacon is built to work without a connection. Most of what you do never leaves your phone. This explains the exceptions — the few features that talk to a server, what they send, and who receives it.

The short version

  • No user accounts. We never ask for your name, address, or date of birth.
  • No advertising, analytics, or tracking of any kind.
  • We do not sell or rent your information, and never will.
  • Your supplies, household details, notes, downloaded maps, and the guidance library stay on your device.

What stays on your device

The Q&A library and Library articles, everything you enter into the app, downloaded map regions, and your subscription status. We cannot see any of it and could not retrieve it if asked.

What is sent, and when

Nothing is sent in the background. Each of these happens only when you use that feature.

  • Local alerts — your approximate coordinates go directly from your device to the U.S. National Weather Service. They do not pass through our servers and we never receive your location.
  • Photo identification — the photo you submit goes to our server and on to Anthropic. We keep no copy. Beacon never uploads your camera roll.
  • Voice input — the recording goes to our server and on to OpenAI to be turned into text. We do not retain the audio. Typing avoids this entirely.
  • Unanswered questions — most questions are answered by the library on your phone with no network request. If yours matches nothing and you are online, the text goes to our server and on to Groq. We keep no record of what you asked.
  • Subscription — your email and payment details go to Stripe. Card details never touch our systems.

Location is also used entirely on your device to centre the map and suggest which region to download, with no network request at all. You can decline location permission; alerts will then cover national and global sources only.

Please do not include personal, medical, or identifying details about yourself or anyone else in a question, photo, or recording you submit.

Service providers

Netlify (hosting), Stripe (payments), Anthropic (photo identification), OpenAI (voice), Groq (unmatched questions), Cloudflare (domain routing and map hosting), the National Weather Service (alerts), and OpenStreetMap (map data). They process data on our behalf so a feature can work and may not use it for their own purposes. We share nothing with advertisers or data brokers.

How long we keep things

We do not operate a user database. Your location, photos, audio, and questions are not retained after a request is answered. Our host keeps standard technical logs for a limited period. Subscription records are held by Stripe for as long as tax and accounting rules require.

Children

Beacon is intended for adults and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Your choices

  • Location, camera, and microphone permissions can be declined or revoked at any time in your device settings.
  • Uninstalling Beacon removes your saved data, downloaded maps, and subscription record from the phone.
  • You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of information we hold, subject to records we are legally required to keep.

Security

Requests between the app and our servers are encrypted in transit. Because we hold so little — no accounts, no user database, no stored submissions — there is very little about you for us to lose.
